PATCH is a partial update: a field an operation touches is written, an omitted field is preserved (preserve-on-omit). A 'replace' of userDefinedId to null clears that column. name cannot be cleared to empty and state cannot be removed (400). isAdvancedGrading is silently cleared unless the Pro module is enabled; promoting isDefault demotes the previous default. defaultGradingSizeId and sizes[] are read-only and not part of the patch document. A failed 'test' operation returns 409; any other operation that cannot be applied returns 422.
